Just picked up a 2022 M4 Competition. Never owned a BMW before and honestly never wanted one (except for the BMW S1000RR bike.) My short list was the C8 Vette and a gently used F.

I've previously owned five BMW's, including an E36 M3, and an E46 M3. I loved both of those cars. I'm looking at potentially buying a 2016-2018 M4. It just concerns me a bit that the reviews of this series are not all that great, and they all mention that the suspension provides rough ride on.

In 2008 you could order a 550i with a few options for AUD190k. Or buy my home. I bought the home, and then in 2020 bought the 550i. It was AUD14k, nice car. Surprisingly reliable and simple to work on. Not saying don't get the M4, but $300k net worth isn't "money is no object" territory.

Pros and cons of owning an M4 If anyone could enlighten on what to expect if I do end up purchasing an M4, I'm stuck between this car and getting a standard 4 series but my midlife crisis is saying that is not as fun.

From someone that's worked at BMW & has owned numerous M cars, yes it's borderline too much car for the street. The stock suspension is pretty stiff, has a lot of torque and it's somewhat exhausting to drive on a daily basis. Get an M340i or M440i if you want something sportier/quicker than the 330i. This latest M3/M4 is known more than all before it for being sterile / boring at low speeds. You may be happier in something more involving - if not a Porsche, maybe a Cadillac Blackwing, a used previous-generation M2, a Toyota Supra / BMW Z4 Handschalter, or even a Toyota GR86.
