4WD vs 2WD Discussion in ' General Tundra Discussion ' started by mike90, Feb 12, 2019.
True, more moving parts means greater chance for mechanical failure. I lived in town when I bought my first 4WD, a gently used 2000 Tundra TRD Access Cab. I wasn't looking for 4WD at that time, but after I used it in the snow to get up to my house on a hilly subdivision street, I became hooked on the feature.
May seem like an odd question but my RWD 2007 Tundra I just used weight in the back for traction. Other cars had automatic AWD or some intelligent 4WD (Range Rover Sport) I'm driving a 2021 Limited with TRD off road package and triple peak tires. Lifted 3" in the front 1" in the rear.
Actually it was up through 2003 that the Tundra 4WD was strictly part time (it had a traditional transfer case in the middle with the front and rear driveshafts locked together when in 4WD). The 2004s are the first 4WD Tundras with the TRAC option which, among other things, includes a center differential.

The Sequoia TC has 2WD to 4WD functionality identical to the Tundra with the addition of having the selectable Torsen locking/unlocking center differential like the full time AWD Land Cruisers in both high and low ranges.
Why didn't Toyota include a user selectable four wheel drive auto multimode, for 4WD in the above scenario, with a center differential between the axles to prevent drive train binding? Is automated 4WD switching too unpredictable to be safe? Did Toyota provide a better solution on the 2022 Tundra? Or is multimode not all that great in reality?
I am new to 4WD and would appreciate any brief advice on what not to do, when to use it, when to use 4L vs 4H, if you do such.

I recently traded in my 2012 Tundra for a 2024 Limited TRD off road. I haven't really needed 4 wheel drive yet since the traction control works so much better than the old truck, however I read recently that I need to be putting the truck in 4H and 4L once a month or so, so I tried it out. The truck will go into 4H only if I'm driving.

I have a question about the 4wd system that the Tundra has I'm a the very early stages of looking into purchasing a new truck. I'm kind of eying the new Tundra but what gets me is the 4WD system. Does the Tundra, old and new, even come with a 4wd auto function like everyone else in the truck segment or is it just 2H, 4H, 4L?
